Particleboard “is a composite panel product consisting of cellulosic particles of various sizes that are bonded together with a synthetic resin or binder under heat and pressure. Particle geometry, resin levels, board density and manufacturing processes may be modified to produce products suitable for specific end uses. At the time of manufacture, additives can be incorporated to impart specific performance enhancements including greater dimensional stability, increased fire retardancy and moisture resistance.“
MDF “is a composite panel product typically consisting of cellulosic fibers combined with a synthetic resin or other suitable bonding system and joined together under heat and pressure. Additives may be introduced during manufacturing to impart additional characteristics. MDF panels are manufactured with a variety of physical properties and dimensions, providing the opportunity to design the end product with the specific MDF needed. The surface of MDF is flat, smooth, uniform, dense and free of knots and grain patterns. The homogeneous density profile of MDF allows intricate and precise machining and finishing techniques for superior finished products.”
VENEER CORE and MEDIUM DENSITY OVERLAY (MDO) CORE.
Veneer core “has been one of the most recognized and trusted wood building products for decades. Manufactured from thin sheets of cross-laminated veneer and bonded under heat and pressure with strong adhesives, plywood panels have superior dimensional stability and an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and are highly resistant to impacts, chemicals, and changes in environmental temperature and humidity.”
MDO core “combine the toughness of . . . plywood with the superior wear of an overlaid surface.”
Raw and Pressed Neenah Heirloom® PaperBack Core.
“ALPHARETTA, Ga. (July 31, 2009) – Neenah Paper’s HEIRLOOM® Wood Veneer Backers and Laminating Substrates are impregnated papers used as laminating bases for a variety of end uses in the furniture and wood products industry. They are designed to facilitate the production of the furniture item, enhance other elements used in the manufacturing process and result in a better quality final piece.
HEIRLOOM® Wood Veneer Backers and Laminating Substrates can be used for such purposes as backing flexible veneer, cross-banding exotic veneer for panel faces and reinforcing edgebanding and decorative paper. The latex saturated and/or coated backers are cost effective and high performing. Many of them provide high strength and durability while others offer flexibility and stiffness depending on the usage required.
With years of experience in the wood products industry, as new applications are developed, Neenah Paper can create custom backers and substrates to meet manufacturer’s changing needs.
Specific products in the line include:
- Veneer Backers for Contours on Combination Faces – applied to furniture or table face areas rather than edges
- Wood Veneer Backing for EDGE BANDING or MOULDING WRAP – provides a support network for thin veneers so they can be cut into strips or long webs for edgings
- Decorative Overlay Lamination – designed to reinforce thin decorative papers (foils) used in the manufacture of ready-to-assemble furniture
- Cross-Banding – designed to stabilize exotic veneers on panel and furniture faces
Neenah Paper now offers HEIRLOOM® Wood Veneer Backers and Laminating Substrates that are GREENGUARD Children & Schools SM Certified for low-emitting products and Forest Stewardship Council FSC™ Certified (SW-COC-000885). GREENGUARD performance based standards define products with low chemical and particle emissions for use indoors such as building materials, furnishings, furniture and cleaning and maintenance products. The FSC Trademark identifies products which contain wood from well-managed forests certified in accordance with the rules of the Forest Stewardship Council.”

PolyBak™ core “is a polymer impregnated Kraft liner board, and is unique in the backer and overlay market due to its moisture resistance, strength, flexibility and extensive variety of products offered. Unlike competing paper backers, PolyBak is not brittle, allowing it to be rolled and bent without breaking. It is most often used in the following applications:
- Balancing substrates faced with laminates or veneers
- As a crossband in plywood construction, PolyBak provides a smooth surface for painting or overlays such as veneer and vinyl.” https://www.richwoodind.com/polybak/ Sept. 16. 2018.
